The most popular cryptocurrency price aggregator site has rolled out a new way of ranking exchanges that keeps owner Binance at the top of the exchange table.<\/p>\n

CoinMarketCap came under fire last month after its new web traffic-based ranking system gave Binance \u2013 which\u00a0acquired the aggregator<\/a>\u00a0for a rumored $400 million in April \u2013 a perfect score. \u201cSix weeks in and Binance\u2019s acquisition of CoinMarketCap [is] already being abused to manipulate the rankings,\u201d\u00a0tweeted<\/a>\u00a0an irate Mati Greenspan at the time.<\/p>\n

Well, the price site has some good news: \u201cWe have just implemented a new algorithm to replace the previous default ranking of exchanges by\u00a0Web Traffic Factor,\u201d reads an\u00a0upbeat blog post<\/a>\u00a0from Thursday.<\/p>\n

CoinMarketCap\u2019s new ranking system basically amalgamates all the metrics used to rate an exchange\u2019s individual markets \u2013 its\u00a0bitcoin<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0ether<\/a>\u00a0market, say \u2013 into one easy-to-read score.<\/p>\n

There are two components: The market pair is an exchange\u2019s reported trading volume, liquidity and web traffic factor, combined to create a single score. This is evaluated by a \u201cConfidence\u201d indicator where CoinMarketCap\u2019s own algorithm passes judgment on if the score is accurate, or if it looks like it\u2019s been fudged.<\/p>\n

Carylyne Chan, CoinMarketCap\u2019s acting CEO, said in a statement the new rankings \u201cwill provide our users with an accurate reflection of the trading venues, as they are scored on a triage of factors that provide a complete picture.\u201d The \u201cmachine learning algorithm,\u201d she added, would dynamically adjust to improve accuracy as it receives more data over time.<\/p>\n

New metrics, including new \u201cquantitative factors,\u201d were currently undergoing tests and could be incorporated into the new ranking system at a later date.<\/p>\n

Like other price aggregators, CoinMarketCap has been trying to find a solution for dodgy data. As it says on its\u00a0methodology page<\/a>, inflating volumes \u201cto give the impression of legitimacy and a false sense of liquidity in markets \u2026 has, in the past, contributed to eroding confidence in the cryptocurrency industry and has, at times, misled both investors and traders.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although CoinMarketCap previously used an adjusted volume metric, which excluded skewed or suspicious data, it was replaced last month with a web traffic factor, the first phase of a new ranking system to improve identifying inflated volumes.<\/p>\n

But, as\u00a0CoinDesk reported<\/a>\u00a0last month, eyebrows were raised when Binance, which had been ranked 15 under the old system, moved to the top with a web traffic score of 1,000, the best possible.<\/p>\n

CoinMarketCap has denied it favored its owner. Arguing the company was at the beginning of a major overhaul in its ranking system, the company said a balanced and accurate picture would emerge as more metrics came online.<\/p>\n

Chan told CoinDesk at the time the \u201cWeb Traffic Factor is one of many factors that will be in the final iteration of the new ranking.\u201d This position was reiterated on Thursday when CoinMarketCap said the \u201cWeb Traffic Factor was only an intermediate step in the development of this comprehensive solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, now that it\u2019s live, how does CoinMarketCap\u2019s fully-iterated rankings treat Binance?<\/p>\n

Well, don\u2019t expect too many changes. The exchange page, which use the new algorithm, keeps Binance at the top of the table.<\/p>\n

In terms of rankings for the largest markets: bitcoin, ether, tether, and\u00a0litecoin<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 which comprise around 80% of total activity \u2013 Binance consistently takes the top spot.<\/p>\n

Along with the high liquidity and volumes as well as a perfect web traffic score, CoinMarketCap has awarded, along with similar pairs for Coinbase and Kraken, a 100% confidence score: it has complete trust in Binance\u2019s data.<\/p>\n

Speaking to CoinDesk, Chan reiterated that CoinMarketCap only provided neutral data and rankings and did not \u201cupdate algorithms to suit anyone\u2019s agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCoinMarketCap continues to be run as an independent entity from Binance,\u201d she wrote in an email. Any changes to the methodology came solely from \u201cour team\u2019s volition and understanding of what is best for the crypto industry.\u201d<\/p>\n
