Major crypto-asset exchange Coinbase<\/a><\/b>\u00a0claims that although most of its users initially favor\u00a0bitcoin (BTC)<\/a>, the vast majority also go on to trade altcoins and other digital assets.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0blog post<\/a>, the platform claimed,<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAmong customers with at least five purchases, 60% start with bitcoin but just 24% stick exclusively to BTC.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It means that 60% of BTC buyers on Coinbase are going into altcoins eventually.<\/p>\n

In total, it claims that \u201cover three quarters\u201d of its customers \u201ceventually buy other assets\u201d \u2013 namely altcoins. Furthermore, Coinbase says its customers \u201ctrade non-BTC assets at a roughly 3% higher rate than their relative market caps would suggest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bitcoin\u2019s market capitalization dominance (almost 67% today) has been all but unchallenged since its inception, but Coinbase\u2019s claims would appear to indicate that for some people BTC is a gateway to further investment, with altcoins growing in popularity.<\/p>\n

The blog\u2019s author wrote that Coinbase \u201csees a trend where bull markets show increasing traction among alternative assets.\u201d<\/p>\n

This could be for a variety of reasons, the exchange opined, \u201cbut one is largely psychological.\u201d<\/p>\n

The author explained,<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAs people feel good about their initial crypto investments (in bitcoin), they branch out to find other possible categorical winners (as evident in the 2017 bull run).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

However, bitcoin remains most investors\u2019 safety net of choice, per the author, who added, that \u201cthe converse is also possible, as prices drop and fear grips the market (2018\u20132019), a flight to crypto safety drove bitcoin back to the forefront.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coinbase admitted that this \u201cincreasing drive\u201d to non-BTC assets \u201cis in part due to\u201d its own business strategy that has involved the \u201ccontinued addition\u201d of new altcoins and other tokens.<\/p>\n

However, it claimed that \u201cprice volatility significantly swings consumer behavior toward non-BTC assets.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moves away from BTC occurred in 2017, and are \u201cnow evident in large spikes,\u201d with early 2020 drives toward\u00a0ethereum (ETH)<\/a>,\u00a0tezos (XTZ)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0chainlink (LINK)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The author concluded with a poetic flourish, writing,<\/p>\n
