Bitcoin (BTC)<\/a>\u2019S Usage In Argentina May Not Be Connected With A Desire To Buy Fiats Like The United States Dollar, Says An Industry Expert, Who Says That Argentinians Could Well Have More Nuanced Reasons For Snapping Up Vast Quantities Of The World\u2019s Favourite Cryptocurrency In Recent Weeks.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0reported last month<\/a>, after trading volumes rose on peer-to-peer (P2P) platform\u00a0LocalBitcoins<\/b>,\u00a0Open Money Initiative<\/b>\u00a0contributor Matt Ahlborg claimed that for most Venezuelans, bitcoin was being used as a \u201cgateway,\u201d and is primarily traded by the nation\u2019s large ethnic Chinese community.<\/p>\n

But Ahlborg says that although Argentina has also seen elevated BTC trading volume on LocalBitcoins, dollar dreams are not inspiring the nation\u2019s most recent bitcoin rush.<\/p>\n

In a blog\u00a0post<\/a>, Ahlborg opines that while Venezuelans \u201ctypically purchase bitcoin with bolivars in order to immediately turn around and trade them away for dollars held in offshore accounts,\u201d this is not the case in Argentina. He writes,<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIn Argentina, there already exists an extensive informal infrastructure to obtain dollars through the cueva networks. Consequently, bitcoin is needed a lot less.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Cuevas, which means caves in Spanish, are illegal\u00a0bureau de change<\/i> outlets that can be found in most major city centres, particularly in the capital Buenos Aires. Citizens often use these to buy USD, euro and other international fiats.<\/p>\n

Instead, Ahlborg believes that Argentinians may instead be using BTC as a speculative tool. He also theorizes that Venezuelan migrant workers in Argentina might be responsible for driving up bitcoin volumes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And a third reason, and perhaps the biggest, behind the rise of BTC in Argentina, he says, are \u201cproblems endemic to Argentina,\u201d such as \u201cthe reintroduction of capital controls.\u201d<\/p>\n

Argentina\u2019s financial crisis continues to deepen, with international creditors earlier this month reject a debt offer,\u00a0per<\/a>\u00a0the Financial Times. The nation has defaulted on loans worth over USD 500 million, and high inflation has dogged the country\u2019s fiat peso for several months.<\/p>\n

Ahlborg concludes that bitcoin\u2019s fate in Argentina will depend on whether the government decides to crackdown on Cuevas, and whether Buenos Aires decides to \u201clay on new capital controls or back off and let free markets reign.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
