The flight to safety has pushed down the 10-year note\u2019s yield, which moves in the opposite direction from its price, to historically low levels below 1 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese changes are being made to address highly unusual disruptions in Treasury financing markets associated with the coronavirus outbreak,\u201d the New York Fed said in a statement on its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/markets\/opolicy\/operating_policy_200312a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" data-reactroot=\"\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement follows announcements by the Fed branch&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/as-ny-fed-promises-more-cash-what-will-christine-lagarde-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"earlier in the week (opens in a new tab)\" data-reactroot=\"\">earlier in the week<\/a>&nbsp;that it would increase the maximum amount of overnight loans provided to Wall Street bond dealers through \u201crepo\u201d markets \u2014 essentially short-term collateralized loans \u2014 to $175 billion from $100 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The pumping of trillions of dollars of fresh liquidity into the financial system recalled the Federal Reserve\u2019s unprecedented efforts during the crisis of 2008 and the years afterward to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2011-08-21\/wall-street-aristocracy-got-1-2-trillion-in-fed-s-secret-loans?sref=5REZoVy2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-reactroot=\"\">ply banks and markets with money<\/a>&nbsp;in a bid to revive the economy in the wake of Lehman Brothers\u2019 bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Fed said Thursday it would initiate the injections as soon as Thursday afternoon, beginning with $500 billion of three-month repo loans.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the bank will offer additional repo operations with $500 billion of three-month loans and $500 billion of one-month loans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree-month and one-month repo operations for $500 billion will be offered on a weekly basis for the remainder of the monthly schedule,\u201d according to the statement. \u201cThe Desk will continue to offer at least $175 billion in daily overnight repo operations and at least $45 billion in two-week term repo operations twice per week over this period.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S.&nbsp;central bankers&nbsp;pledged Thursday to inject some $1.5 trillion into the financial system in an effort to calm panicky markets after the spreading coronavirus triggered steep price declines on everything from stocks to&nbsp;bitcoin.
